EXERCISE

People are made for movement, not for sitting. There are even claims such as “Sitting is the new smoking” to describe the detrimental effect of sitting on health.

But what does that have to do with the mood and the inner drive?

While reading, I came across some amazing connections between movement and mood. Among other things, I did not know

  • That every upward movement brightens the mood
  • That swinging on a mini-trampoline is used in the treatment of depression. Depressed people have lost their sense of orientation and centeredness. Jumping or swinging on the trampoline trains this orientation by alternating between gravity and weightlessness. The uplifting and grounding effect of swinging offers people with mood swings the chance to find their own center again. In addition, the lymph flow and thus the entire metabolism is stimulated, which particularly benefits the elimination process.
  • That there is even a branch of research that deals with the interactions between posture and the psyche. This is embodiment research. It was discovered, for example, that an upright, forward and upward posture can also lift the mood, whereas a slouched posture intensifies a depressed mood.
  • That even the smallest everyday routines, such as walking the dog, have both a mood-enhancing and life-prolonging effect
  • That a measurable, health-promoting effect occurs from approx. 7,000 steps per day
  • That it doesn’t matter which sports you do, but that it is much more important that you enjoy the activity and do it regularly on a voluntary basis. That’s how I discovered cycling and cycle touring, among other things.
  • That spending time in the forest, even just lingering there, has a health-promoting and mood-enhancing effect. This is called “forest bathing”. The cause lies in the terpenes, which are odorants and plant substances that are released by trees and help them to communicate with each other, among other things.
